The Christ of Christmas

24 12 2009

As you celebrate Christmas, we at Creation Evangelism Tools Ministries would like to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas, and share with you some verses that speak of the Christ of Christmas.

Genesis 3:15 is the first Messianic prophecy.

15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”

Isaiah 9: 6-7 speak of Christ as a ruler, among other things.

6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Isaiah 11:1-2 describe Jesus as being from the line of Jesse (King David’s father).

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

Isaiah 53: 3-12 speak of Christ’s suffering on behalf of the sins of mankind.

3 He was despised and rejected by men;
a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
and as for his generation, who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people?
9 And they made his grave with the wicked
and with a rich man in his death,
although he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Isaiah 60:1-3 speaks of Christ as the Light that has come into this dark world.

Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
2 For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
and his glory will be seen upon you.
3 And nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your rising.

John 1:1-5, 14 this beautiful passage speaks of Christ in many ways: as being in the beginning with God the Father, as the Word of God, as the Creator, as Life, the Light of men, the overcomer of darkness, the only Son

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life,  and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Galatians 4:4-7 tell of us the nature and circumstances of Christ’s birth, and how we who are born of God (reborn, Christians) become His children, calling Him father.

4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

These are just a few of the many number of passages foretelling us of Christ’s advent.  As you celebrate His birth, we hope that you will take time to reflect on the many things He is as displayed in these and other scriptures.

Merry Christmas!

The CET Team,

Joel, Abby, Caleb, Phoebe & Johanna

CET Ministries’ November/December 2009 Newsletter

1 12 2009

We have now published our November/December 2009 issue of our email newsletter.  If you would like to receive it, please click here, and send us an email.  We pray that you will be blessed and equipped through this newsletter.

Here is the first paragraph from the main article, written by Joel Kautt:

Psalm 75:1 We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near.”

         So what does creation have to do with Thanksgiving? When I thought about that question, I remembered several passages in the Psalms where the psalmist proclaims thanksgiving to the Lord for His role as the Creator. I thought about how God shows His awesome power in and through the things He has made, and how those displays of His glory should prompt us to worship and praise Him in gratitude for all that He has done. While digging deeper in this subject I found several instances in the Scriptures where the word “thanksgiving” is used in conjunction with the words “praise” and “declare” / “show forth” / “tell of” and then often the passage will proceed to describe some aspect of God’s handiwork seen in the physical universe. This would seem to indicate that one way to express thanksgiving to our God is to praise Him for His mighty works and tell others about His awesome power seen in His creation.
