Are You An April Fool?

Today is April Fool’s Day, where we like to say things that aren’t true, and try to make other people look like fools. But, the real question is, “Am I a fool?” I thought it would be a good thing to hear from God today on the subject. There are many different passages in the Word of God that speak about fools, folly and foolishness, as well as many on the subject of wisdom. Here are just a few:

Psalm 14:1, “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.””

Proverbs 1:7, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Proverbs 3:35, “The wise shall inherit glory, But shame shall be the legacy of fools.”

Proverbs 1:22, ““How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, And fools hate knowledge.”

Proverbs 13:20, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.”

Proverbs 14:9, “Fools mock at sin, But among the upright there is favor.”

Proverbs 15:2, “The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.”

Ecclesiastes 5:1-3, “Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God. For God is in heaven, and you on earth; therefore let your words be few. For a dream comes through much activity, and a fool’s voice is known by his many words.”

Richard Dawkins, Famous Atheist, Not Entirely Sure God Doesn’t Exist

LONDON (RNS) A controversial Oxford University professor billed by many as the world’s “most famous atheist” now says he is not 100 percent sure that God doesn’t exist — but just barely.

In a 100-minute debate with Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, Richard Dawkins surprised his online and theater audiences by conceding a personal chink of doubt about his conviction that there is no such thing as a creator.

But, to the amusement of the archbishop and others, the evolutionary biologist swiftly added that he was “6.9 out of seven” certain of his long-standing atheist beliefs.

Replying to moderator Anthony Kenny, a noted English philosopher, Dawkins said, “I think the probability of a supernatural creator existing (is) very, very low.”

Dawkins, author of “The God Delusion” and other best-sellers, is a leader of the “New Atheist” movement that aggressively challenges belief in God and criticizes harm done in the name of religion.

“What I can’t understand is why you can’t see (that life started from nothing and) is such a staggering, elegant, beautiful thing, why would you want to clutter it up with something so messy as a God,” Dawkins told Williams, according to The Daily Telegraph account.

The archbishop, who heads both the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion, replied that he “entirely agreed” with the “beauty” part of Dawkins’ statement — but said “I’m not talking about God as an extra who you can shoehorn onto that.”

Ministry Update

In the latter part of 2011, we partnered with Christian Worldview Outreach (CWVO), and a local pastor (who is a native of India), to send some of our articles to be translated and published in an Indian Christian newspaper. The first article, Dinosaurs: Important to the Gospel, was published in January 2012. After the publication, there came about stiff opposition and rejection from Christian school teachers who believe in evolution.

Here’s an excerpt from the email we received just a few days ago from the director of CWVO:

I am sorry to report that the reaction to our first article in the newspaper in Gugarat, India created such a strong reaction that the newspaper has decided to stop publishing articles. The primary protestors are Christian school teachers. … All of your hard work has produced outstanding results. We should not be surprised if there is resistance to the truth of the gospel.

We believe that God will open other doors of opportunity similar to this one. Pray for us as we seek to follow God’s leading in this and other areas.

When Was the Ice Age?

Although secular scientists argue that there were multiple Ice Ages over a period of hundreds of thousands of years,1 we know from the Bible, that such a timescale is much too long to be accurate. If the Ice Age(s) did not occur hundreds of thousands of years ago, when did the Ice Age occur? The answer to this question is partially revealed in our discussion in the feature article regarding how the great Flood would provide the necessary meteorological catalysts to spawn an Ice Age shortly after the Flood. Using Biblical genealogical records, basic mathematics, and logical inferences, we can deduce that the Flood occurred sometime around 2,500 B.C.2 So, we can infer that the Ice Age took place sometime following the Flood. One meteorologist estimates that the Ice Age lasted around 700 years, and peaked approximately 500 years after the Flood, or around 2,000 B.C.3
